THE ‘PROPER’ KOI POND PROJECT OF A LIFETIME?

4th. update 11/10/11

Went down to the pond today to do a stock check on the fittings in order to ensure we’d have enough when required. On arrival we found the builders busy completing the block and beam roof of the filter house. The roof will be sealed and weatherproofed with glass-fibre in a few days time.

You can see the rockwork ledge at the front of the filter house, landscaping commences on this tomorrow and we expect it to be completed in three weeks or so after the waterfall area has been finished. This next shot shows the cured base for the main waterfall.

There are no lights yet in the filter housing, these are the access steps down. Before the steelwork is fabricated to support the twelve extended Eric Four units the entire walls and roof of this housing will be plastered and decorated beforehand and the floor will be painted.

This next shot shows the 4”; 3” and 2” bore lines entering the filter house from the pond and all these lines will be fitted with double union ball valves as they enter the housing. This is merely a ‘fail-safe’ should anything require removal or replacement at a later date.

I took a shot from the new house extension and this will be the view directly from this living room towards the waterfall itself.

Here’s the original plans drawn up for both house and pond by the architect after I’d submitted my plans for the pond. The teahouse will arrive tomorrow and the steel bridge is already under construction.

Plans of pond and house

This next bit is way over my head. I’m told that state-of-the-art computers will control not only the pond and filtration system, these computers will control the entire house, lighting system and even the grounds surrounding it all. Next time I’m down I’ll ask the two boffins who are there designing it all to supply some technical information that I can relay.
These computers and controls are being installed in a building some 30 meters away from the filter house and the next shot shows the wiring at the base of the wall, which is taken to the auto valves that will discharge the Eric units.

Regarding the installation of the filtration units and the installation of all other items such as skimmer pumps, heat exchangers and U/V units, this is far from being a piece of cake and I’ll be doing updates all the way through this stage. Here are just some of the items patiently awaiting installation.

The water for the pond will come from 70 meters below ground. Drilling will commence next week and then a full laboratory analysis will be made and a report given as to the suitability of this water for a Koi pond. If there are any adverse readings that need to be remedied they will be remedied before the water is introduced – most certainly this water will be devoid of dissolved oxygen content.

A bit daunting isn’t it?

More later, Waddy.
